1. Rome (cont'd)

Just because a hotel is named Hemingway doesn't mean they speak English, the Ishikawas discovered, to their chagrin when they finally returned to Europe on Oct 1, 2002. Perhaps if they'd booked a better hotel, the trip might have started better. They used the hotel finding site www.venere.com for most of their hotels on the trip, and were lucky more often than not. The Hemingway had a serious plumbing problem, perhaps to encourage its guests to spend as much time out of the room as possible. The only good thing about the Hemingway was its nearness to a Piave Café, not surprisingly, on Via Piave.

The Ishikawas were enchanted with the variety of vegetables offered and assumed, once more incorrectly, that delicious vegetables would be easy to find throughout Italy. The rosemarried eggplant was considerably better than any vegetable they had for the rest of their month in Italy.
