6. Venice

Cat had wanted to see Venice since reading Death in Venice in University. The Ishikawas arrived at their hotel in the evening after a long train ride from Florence. The first thing they noticed from their hotel room was the absence of street noise. Of course! No cars, just the sound of lapping waves.

The expensive hotel was pleasant in a cheap sort of way. It was right across the bridge from the Venetian Ghetto. From a word in the Venetian language, the word has spread. Seeing the signs in Hebrew, the kids playing in the streets and dining on great potato pancakes at the Jewish restaurant Gam Gam, the Ishikawas were delighted to see the area regaining its identity.
