1. Lisbon (cont'd)

The palaces at Sintra are considerably more amusing than royal palaces elsewhere in Europe. There appears to be a Portugese sense of humour that isn't replicated in other European countries. The Ishikawas were also stunned at how many people spoke perfect English. One reason offered for this is that American TV shows are shown with subtitles, not dubbed. On thier visit to equally English speaking Holland in 1980, Holland's TV preferences was also offered as a reason for English fluency there.

Back in Lisbon, the Ishikawas were delighted with the subway system and its fasncinating murals.
